[Voice - Locked from Al, Winry, Gracia, and Elicia]

This might seem like a weird question, but I need to ask.

A lot of people - kids, even - act like they're fine with death and killing. The draft taught me that much. And around here dying doesn't even seem to matter because you just come back anyway. Is that what makes it- [Not okay, he can't say okay, it's not okay] ...more acceptable? Or is it something you're used to? And if it was someone else's life at risk, more than just your own, would that-

[...Dammit, this is probably coming out all wrong. But talking to Al back in the hospital had really gotten him thinking, probably too much, and... maybe he can't really understand something he's never experienced himself. Much like human transmutation- it sounds like a perfectly acceptable theory until the truth opens your eyes.]

...Nevermind. But if death is just temporary, is it really still death? And if it is, then... what's it like to die?

[He couldn't even kill the remnants of a Philosopher's Stone to save Ling. Using the souls of Xerxes for his own gain still haunts him to this day. Could he ever kill to save himself if his own death meant Al would die as well...?]

How can anyone be fine with taking the life of another person?

[So... it's the 3rd. Of October. And certain people from Amestris know the significance of that date. It's not exactly an anniversary that Edward or Alphonse celebrate, per se, but it's become an unspoken annual event to have a bonfire on that particular evening, and more often than not staying up all night. An unspoken promise of which neither will remind the other.

One more year gone. One more year of failure. But they're not about to give up, either.

They hadn't been able to have a fire the past year in Amestris, what with the Philosopher's Stone plot going on in the background and their lengthy separation after leaving Briggs, but here they find themselves in October once again, and the pair made a silent agreement to do it now. Thus, after dinner in the backyard of House #23, a fair-sized campfire will be burning all night, carefully watched and maintained by either one or both of the Elric brothers. They're mostly just doing your average campfire stuff- Edward is roasting hotdogs and marshmallows, Al watching the flames and tending to the loose sparks, the pair occasionally tossing out nostalgic stories. It's not an exclusive fire by any means, so bother at will.

And then, sometime around dawn, Edward will wander off to take a leak in the woods, and he won't be coming back. There'll be signs of a quiet scuffle and a flash of alchemic energy - and a collection of metal chips from a robot's arm being deconstructed - but nothing more to be found.]

[ooc: action tags (if any) can get Ed, Al, or both. If you have a preference just say so, otherwise we'll decide between the two of us or toss a coin |D)]

[Those are essentially the magic words for Robert.]

... You are... also a scientist? [He can't camouflage the slight eagerness in his voice, at knowing that there may be other people here who can empathize with him. So far they seem to at least empathize on not wanting to kill...] It is... a-always a pleasure to meet a fellow intellectual...

[Luckily for Robert's face, he doesn't recognize the word "alchemist" - the idea of alchemy is long since dead to him - and so it goes over his head. Even if he had recognized it, though, he's been around long enough in Luceti to know that worlds differ significantly.]

I am an... a-astrobiologist. That is, I study life-forms that e-exist outside of my planet. [While this would be a rather mundane field on Terra, it may be less so for other people.]

Yes, we are... s-spacefaring. Although it is... e-economically and environmentally unfeasible to... u-undergo sustained and lengthy journeys; most interplanetary probes are automated.

[The few humans that have been dispatched to offworlder colonies might not even look like humans to Ed anymore, having been genetically modified to fit the destination planets...]

... Luceti has more... n-non-human hominids than I have ever before witnessed.

... at all? [There's a touch of almost-sadness and almost-surprise in Robert's voice.] ... That is... regrettable.

... I suppose that is... a b-benefit of Luceti, though: exposure to other cultures, and the like. [He is fighting his natural inclination to say "advanced cultures". But he hasn't entirely divested himself from sounding a little pedantic. He's trying, though!]

[It's sad that someone would consider other forms of knowledge a "distraction". Even though Robert himself would've been all pedantic and said that social sciences were probably a distraction, too.]

How exactly does one... r-research alchemy? It is not a f-field I can ever recall hearing of...

Ah, well... my own w-world's information is... mostly l-lost to me, here.

[He says this very sadly and a little slowly. It's been hard going without Terran information - or, really, Terran anything, besides his nanocomputer - for eight months.]

... My world, er... has no books. Nothing p-paper-derived. ... There was simply t-too much environmental destruction...

[... Wow. Okay. Robert has met people from similar periods, to be fair, but it still manages to throw him a moment.]

... Ah... data in my w-world is stored in massive global databases, as quantum e-electronic information. Specifically, encoded in the spin of electrons.

[... Not as if this will mean much of anything to Ed.]

Yes. F-Far from it. In fact, most technology from my world... is unavailable here.

[It's all too advanced for the Malnosso to bring it.]

[Indeed, though some more than others.]

When I... f-first arrived here, I thought they were... very strange nanocomputers. [Very flat, flexible, strangely-textured nanocomputers.] Or, er, a s-similar communications device.

The Internet at home is... reminiscent of the w-wireless connections between the journals, here.

[... Sorry, Ed.]

Ah - well, I could... a-attempt to explain it, if you were curious...? [Though, again, it just might end up being more confusing than anything.]

[Awkward halting explanation is a go.]

The Internet of my planet is... e-essentially a worldwide, wireless communications system that works using multiple, i-interconnected networks that r-relay electronic information. The whole system is... supported by massive hub buildings in every major m-megatropolis on Terra, and database t-terminals that store data from the systems themselves.

[After a pause, he adds, almost shyly:] I have been... t-trying to model part of Linden, my home m-megatropolis, in Luceti's Battle Dome since the... last incident.

The m-majority of it is public, save for very specific kinds of d-data, such as financial or medical data... and, er, there are search engines that a-allow for large-scale surveying of data.

[Depending on what the Philosopher's Stone was classified as, probably much easier. Though considering what some websites find, chances are one would still find information somewhere on the Internet...]
